As parents the necessity of hand sanitizer on your child’s bag is a must. If you are one of those parents like me who usually avoid buying hand sanitizers either out of omission of forgetfulness then you need to make hay while the sun shines. But if you are a regular buyer of hand sanitizer for your child’s bag – a big kudos to you for absolutely making your child healthier and helping him to attend school more regularly says the journal Pediatrics recent study

A new research in Spain discovered that children whose hands were cleaned with sanitizer rather than soap and water missed less number of school days, had reduced respiratory infections and antibiotic prescriptions.

But one would be tempted to ask – wasn’t I taught that hand washing is the best and most reliable way of preventing diseases? Of course it is! But how convenient is it for one to constantly wash their hands? It is almost not easily accessible to children to constantly wash and hands as at when due. Not to worry, the hand sanitizer with the right formula will do almost more good to your child.

911 daycare children were studied in Spain for a period of eight months, split into three different groups – one of the groups used soap and water to clean their hand, the other group used hand sanitizer while the third group observed their normal hand washing routine.

WHAT DID THE HAND SANITIZER RESEARCH DISCOVER?

The results of the study reveal

GROUP PERCENTAGE OF MISSED SCHOOL DAYS(%)
Hand Sanitizer 3.25
Soap and Water 3.9
Normal Hygiene 4.2

The variations seem very minute but those who the soap and water group are prone to higher risk of contracting a respiratory infection to about 21%.

Examples of these respiratory infection include coughing, runny nose, sore throat and so on.
So more antibiotics prescription will be needed for children in this group to treat these infections.
Conversely, children in the hand sanitizer group had a reduced 23% rate of contracting respiratory infections.

WHAT DID the World Health Organisation – WHO SAY ABOUT HANDWASHING & HAND SANITIZERS?

“’Hand washing promotion reduced the incidence of diarrhoea in day-care centres and schools by approximately one-third in high-income countries, and may prevent a similar proportion in low- and middle-income countries a
Community-based trials in low- and middle-income countries demonstrated a reduction in the incidence of diarrhoea by approximately one-third following hand washing promotion
In one hospital-based trial in patients at high risk of diarrhoea, hand washing promotion also reduced the incidence of diarrhea”

Our kids should be taught the simple but important hygiene principles – you must wash your hands with soap and water before and after eating, after the use of toilets, after playing with our toys, animals, after playing outside, after coughing or blowing our nose, when we feel we have soiled our hands etc .

When washing our hands properly with soap and water isn’t possible, ensure you provide them with hand sanitizer with the right formula. Preferably an alcohol based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol
